Balfour Hush Heath Estate |
Since 2002, we have been at the heart of the growing English Wine industry – winning National and International awards to become one of England’s most respected wine producers. Our flagship sparkling Balfour Brut Rosé was the first English Sparkling wine to be served in BA First Class and the official English wine of the London 2012 Olympic games.
It was Leslie’s idea to plant the original vines at Hush Heath in 2002, with a view to making a pink sparkling wine of equivalent quality to Billecart Salmon Rosé – their favourite pink Champagne. And so, five acres were planted to produce a wine they would love. “If we can’t sell it”, they thought, “we’ll drink it”.
Fortunately, when Balfour Brut Rosé was launched in 2004 it quickly became a major success, winning a gold medal and trophy in the International Wine Challenge for its first vintage. The accolades did not stop there and Balfour Brut Rosé was the first English Sparkling wine served on British Airways First Class worldwide. When 10,000 bottles of Balfour Brut Rosé, made from the first harvest in 2004, won a gold medal at the International Wine Challenge in 2007, Balfour Winery was officially on the wine map.
Over the following years, both the winery and tasting room were greatly expanded and are now regarded as some of the best visitor and winemaking facilities in England.
Vineyards located on Hush Heath Estate alone account for over 100 different clonal and varietal combinations. To allow for our precision harvesting and small-batch winemaking approach, our winery is equipped with two 4-tonne presses. Complete control over the winemaking process is possible with our own bottling and disgorging line.
Fergus Elias, our Head Winemaker explains that our Vintage sparkling collection, are all single vineyard wines, which express both the terroir and vintage whilst showcasing our identifiable Balfour signature style; purity, freshness with an ability to age gracefully.
Our first ever wine, the award-winning, Balfour Brut Rosé, is a real show-stopper and the perfect accompaniment for any special occasion.
For those looking to enjoy a light lunch after a walk around the estate book a table for lunch in the Cellar door to tuck into our seasonal sharing platters and artisan flatbreads. Whereas if you are looking for an exceptional wine and food pairing experience indulge in our A La Carte Menu by reserving a table in our new restaurant 'The Winemakers' Kitchen'- which on Sundays will be serving elegant traditional roast dinners.
