Herbert Hall Organic Winery |
Planted in 2007 by Herbert Hall’s great-grandson, Nicholas Hall, on a South-facing 4-degree gravel-seamed clay slope outside the village of Marden in Kent. This warm organic site has consistently produced the earliest and finest fruit on the estate since it was first farmed by Herbert Hall in the 19th Century.
Organic viticulture, careful fruit selection, barrel ageing and a focus on individual cuvées, some as few as 500 bottles, set this boutique producer apart as the benchmark for English Artisan winemaking.
The five-hectare organic vineyard is situated on the edge of Marden village. It is a sunny south facing slope sheltered by ancient hedgerows. The soil is clay seamed with gravel and produces exceptional fruit. Our philosophy is based on remaining in harmony with nature – farming organically and encouraging the re-introduction of flora and fauna to a region so damaged by conventional farming methods. Most of the vineyard work is done by hand and grapes are pressed within hours of picking.
Working with fellow Winemaker Kirsty Smith, Nicholas continues to produce handmade English Sparkling white and rose wines with a focus on individual cuvées – the winery even makes a special cuvée for HRH The Prince of Wales.
