About Carr Taylor

David and Linda Carr Taylor realised their ambition of planting a vineyard when, in 1969 when they purchased 21 acres of land surrounding their family home.

Background

The initial planting commenced in 1971 with varieties such as Reichensteiner, Gutenborner, Muller Thurgau, Dornfelder and the classic champagne varieties, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay

The glorious summer of 1976 heralded the first commercially viable harvest for the vineyard and some 2000 bottles of Carr Taylor wines were produced! Since then Carr Taylor has gone from strength to strength winning their first award in 1983 in the International Wine and Spirit competition. The following years have seen a succession of medals in international competitions, accruing in excess of 150 awards.

In 1983 an exceptional harvest encouraged the vineyard to experiment with sparkling wine. This venture produced 10,000 bottles of traditionally fermented sparkling wine and resulted in the first commercially available traditional method sparkling wine made in England.

Product Description

We started off with a small amount of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier –the classic Champagne varieties, which are blended into our sparkling wines, particularly the sparkling rosé. With the knowledge we have gained in growing these, we increased the area of Pinot Noir and planted a further 10 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at a local vineyard that we manage. The grapes from these new plantings are used predominantly for the production of quality sparkling wines.

We also make fruit wines, including Ginger, Cherry, Apricot plus mead and a sloe liqueur.
