Biddenden Vineyards |
The Barnes family started to consider diversifying the farm in the late 1960s as apple prices began to decline.. In 1969, one third of an acre of vines was planted and Biddenden Vineyards was born. Today the estate vineyard spans 23 acres of gentle south facing slopes where 12 different grape varieties are grown.
Here at Biddenden 12 different grape varieties are planted across 23 acres of gentle south facing slopes, on sandy loam over clay situated in a shallow sheltered valley. Combined this creates perfect conditions for Germanic and French grape varieties.
Our shop is fully stocked with our own award-winning wines, ciders & juices and we also stock a specially selected range of local and regional products which includes cheese, charcuterie, condiments, snacks, beers and gins from independent and artisan producers, showcasing the very best of local and British food & drink.
The 12 different grape varieties produce our array of award-winning White, Rosé, Red and Sparkling English wines. From the first Biddenden wine, which was bottled in 1972, production has now grown to around 80,000 bottles per year. All vine work on the estate is still carried out by hand, including pruning, canopy management and picking, with harvest running from mid September right through to November.
Ortega, a German grape developed from crossbreeding Müller-Thurgau and Siegerrebe, is our signature variety and covers just over half of the vineyard. Other varieties which go into making our award-winning wines include Bacchus, Dornfelder, Gamay, Pinot Noir, Reichensteiner and Scheurebe. There are also plantings of Schönburger, Huxelrebe and Gewürztraminer.
