Although evidence suggests wine was produced in the Shoreham valley during Roman times, the first vines that were introduced recently at The Mount were 13,000 vines planted in 2004 and comprised seven different varieties:- Pinot Noir, Rondo, Regent, Bacchus, Seyval Blanc, Phoenix and Siegerrebe.
In 2011, Simon Greenwood bought the property and promptly added two acres of Chardonnay taking The Mount to 8 grape varieties and 10 acres of vines. Now a happy family home, Simon and Sarah have grown The Mount into a welcoming English vineyard, restaurant, shop and stunning venue offering wine tasting experiences, special events, weddings and local products.
In total, there are eight different varieties of grapes grown on site. The chalk soil allows our vines to flourish while the climate promotes the slow ripening of our grapes, leading to optimum levels of ripeness and acidity. Although there isn’t a winery onsite, we continuously taste the different wines in the vats, barrels and bottles to determine the readiness of the wine. Using only estate-grown grapes from the vineyard ensures that just the finest fruit is used to produce our wines.
Our Courtyard Restaurant with its fully retractable roof and bi-fold doors is the perfect escape in the beautiful Darent Valley. Enjoy modern British ingredients on delicious sharing platters and stone-baked pizzas paired with our award-winning range of still and sparkling wines. Our underfloor heating will keep you toasty in winter while the retractable roof lets the sun in on warmer days. Open Wednesday to Sunday all year round to eat/drink in or to takeaway.
The Ten Acres Shop opened in August 2020, our wine and gift shop offers a selection of local and luxury gifts as well as a large range of wines and spirits, including our own Mount Vineyard wines.
Our informal yet informative wine tastings comprise trying a selection of Mount Vineyard wines while learning about what’s in your glass and how it got there. We also provide a cheeseboard to enjoy whilst your wine host introduces you to the English wine industry and how The Mount wine is made.
